Why Butler’s Orchard is Our Family’s Favorite
There’s something truly special about finding a place that becomes more than just a destination—it becomes a tradition. For our family, Butler’s Orchard in Germantown, Maryland, has become just that: our go-to spot for outdoor fun, seasonal adventures, and the kind of simple joys that bring families closer together.
We started going to Butler’s Orchard a few years ago “just to pick strawberries,” and now it’s become one of our most cherished family routines. If you’ve never been, let me tell you—this place is so much more than a pick-your-own farm.
Strawberry Picking Fun
Our visits almost always begin in the fields, especially during strawberry season. There’s nothing quite like the look on a child’s face when they spot the perfect red berry hiding under the leaves. The fields at Butler’s are beautiful, clean, and well-organized, making it easy to move around with little ones in tow. Whether it’s your first time picking or your fiftieth, there’s just something magical about harvesting your own fruit under the open sky.
The staff is always friendly and helpful, and they make it easy to get started—baskets ready, maps in hand, and a cheerful smile as they send you on your way. View the picking schedule here.
The Best Playground Ever
After we’ve filled our baskets (and maybe snuck a few juicy bites), we head straight to the Farm Park playground. And let me tell you—this is no ordinary playground.
There’s a giant slide built into the hill, climbing structures, hay bales to jump on, ride-on tractors, and even a sandbox for the littlest ones. The space is spread out and thoughtfully designed so kids of all ages can find something to enjoy. While the kids play and explore, we get to relax on one of the many benches and soak up the fresh air and beautiful countryside.
It’s the kind of screen-free fun that’s hard to come by these days.
A Must-Visit Farm Market & Gift Shop
Of course, no trip to Butler’s is complete without a visit to the Farm Market and gift shop. The second we walk in, the smell of fresh apple cider donuts hits us—and we immediately grab a box (or two). They’re warm, fluffy, perfectly spiced, and honestly, worth the trip all on their own.
The market is also full of other delicious farm-made goods, from jams and honey to seasonal pies and fresh produce. And the gift shop? Let’s just say I’ve never managed to walk out empty-handed. From adorable kitchen towels and farmhouse-style home décor to children’s books and toys, there’s something for everyone.
Perfect Year-Round
What we love most about Butler’s Orchard is how it changes with the seasons—there’s always a reason to come back. In the summer, it’s blueberries, blackberries, and sunflowers. In the fall, there’s the pumpkin patch, hayrides, and their famous Pumpkin Festival. Winter brings festive greenery and cozy holiday vibes. Each visit feels like a new adventure.
The Heart of Family Fun
In a world that moves way too fast, Butler’s Orchard gives us a reason to slow down. It’s a place where we can laugh, explore, get our hands dirty, and make memories that last. Whether you’re planning a quick day trip or looking for your next weekend tradition, I can’t recommend it enough.
We’re already counting down to our next visit. Hope to see you in the fields!
