Non Toxic Baby Products Guide

Hello & Happy Saturday!!

Long before my cooking days while still in undergrad at NYU, drowning in 18 credits, I produced countless non toxic beauty reviews via Eat Drink Shrink. Before I knew the science behind nutrition, I understood the connection between the diet and what we apply to the skin. While roughly 6-7 years ago, even at that time the non toxic scene was still somewhat in it’s nascent stage, but gaining more momentum. Today, there are countless non toxic brands, but even more so in the realm of baby care that are (thank goodness) both accessible and affordable.

While we still shouldn’t forget about our own skincare products, I find that gravitating towards natural products with an infant makes absolute sense to me. A babies skin is much more permeable enabling them to absorb more through the skin. While we can’t put them in a bubble and negative exposures are bound to happen..

Why not choose products today that are both accessible, affordable, and most importantly non toxic?

With more and more brands coming onto the scene I was excited to explore the new options today to share them with you and provide feedback once tested. In my research I discovered some newbies and finally got to explore some of my favorites I’ve been watching over the years. I selected a variety of products, tried to focus on unscented as that’s a goal for the first 6 months, and tried to capture a diverse group of companies from big distributers to small niche brands to bring you a wide range.

In all honesty, I love learning, and as luck may have it, there is SO MUCH to learn in the realm of babies. I’ve been soaking it up and been waiting to share so many products with you. I can’t wait to share even more fab finds I’ve come across and provide feedback on what worked for us via Eat Drink Shrink!

Be sure to check back this August for a full recap on product quality with the brands below.

Have you seen or sampled any of these brands?

Are there other brands you love and support not listed?

I’d love to know!

Pai products are free from Parabens, Alcohol, Phenoxyethanol, Petrochemicals, Detergents (SLS/SLES) and artificial fragrance. They also avoid anything that has the potential to upset or imbalance sensitive skin

Why Pai Skincare: I’ve been familiar with Pai skincare products for a while now and low how gentle they are. That being said, I was excited to sample some of their pregnancy focused products such as the Rosehip Oil,  Head To Toe Hero Buriti Balm Pomegranate & Pumpkin Seed Stretch Mark System. To date I’ve tried countless natural oils and lotions. While the majority don’t disappoint, these Pai products far exceeded my expectations.

We all know stretch marks are determined by genetics, however, a great product also helps mitigate and potentially prevent them. Having naturally dry skin, pregnancy only exacerbates that, because your water intake goes from the traditional 8 to 12 glasses a day. Needless to say, I need products that work and these were like magic. I used the Pumpkin Seed Oil post shower, followed by the lotion to seal it in, and then the Buriti Balm for various dry patches. The oil is amazing, leaving my skin hydrated even the next day. In terms of aroma I would say it’s fairly neutral versus the Erbaviva you’ll read about below.

Believe it or not I even started to experience dry patches in various places. One of the many joys of pregnancy lol. The Buriti cream worked like a charm to not only intensely hydrate those areas, but even eradicated the dry patches altogether. Whether you’re pregnant or simply have severe dry skin, these products work! The Rose Hip Oil is also great for hydrating your face I just recommend that you seal it in with a face lotion.

In addition to pregnancy products they also carry 2 baby products Petite Pai Washh and Moisture Duo! Get the review on these products coming soon to EDS!!

Tubby Todd was created as a natural solution for our family’s sensitive skin. For years we struggled with dryness and eczema, and smooth skin always seemed impossibly out of reach. It was frustrating spending money on yet another product that wasn’t helpful, clean, or safe for our little ones.

We’re passionate about making natural products that really work! Every natural product we make is not only gentle and safe for sensitive skin, but is impressively effective at getting the job done.

  • natural + organic ingredients

  • natural, plant-based fragrances
  • made in the u.s.a.
  • safe for sensitive skin of all ages

Why Tubby Todd: This was one of the last companies I came across and may have to be one of the smaller businesses out of the bunch, but everything was just so on point! I don’t believe at this time you can source their products from any retailers, but they are available online. They offer roughly 15 products, the price point is good, they are non toxic, the packaging eye catching, so I’m really excited about testing their products!! I sampled the BASICS gift set, which features six essential products for the family!

Why Zoe Organics: I’ve been familiar with ZO since their launching years ago. Something about the company always caught my eye whether it be the eye catching bold packing or the simplicity in the ingredients. However, their products cater specifically to pregnancy and baby so I was waiting for the day that I could experience ZO! They offer everything from creams and balms for the belly/nipples and the perf Baby Set with all the staples. Erbaviva organic skincare pioneers robin brown and anna cirronis created erbaviva in los angeles’ artistic topanga canyon enclave in 1996. as early proponents of california’s organic food movement, erbaviva was born from the desire to apply the same principles of sustainability, ethics and quality to the products used on their children’s delicate skin.

Why Erbaviva: I had seen these products on and off the past few years, but after finding them on the shelves at Nordstroms, I was excited to see what they were all about. I love the simplicity in the packaging, the fact that the bottles were darker as it helps to protect the contents more especially being free from parabens which help to preserve products. The name also just had my attention. They offer an array of products that cater to an expecting moms needs as well as all the baby staples.

In addition to them being organic, they also have a great price point! If you’re looking for Erbaviva near you or via online you can review their retailers here.

I tested the pregnancy products and loved everything I sampled. The oil is very aeromatic with notes of lavender. I highly recommend pairing the oil with the cream to seal in the moisture. The cream is on the heavier side versus the Pai, so it’s a little harder to spread, but a little goes a long way. A thick cream is also warranted with pregnancy as the baby and hormones will naturally dehydrate the skin.

You can find the baby items I sampled and get a full review come this August. I think I’m going to love these products just like everything else!

California Baby founder Jessica Iclisoy has always questioned the status quo. While pregnant with her first child, she began to think deeply about how to live a healthier, more natural lifestyle. Shocked to discover carcinogens in products for newborns, she set out to find a better option. There wasn’t one. So she found plant based substitutes for unsafe cleansing and fragrance ingredients and used them to develop her own recipe for a gentle, calming shampoo & bodywash.

Why California Baby: Before you question why California Baby, you have to ask yourself, ..why not lol. This company has my name written all over it and since the early product review days of Eat Drink Shrink, I’ve been eagerly waiting to explore this brand. Whether its the company name, branding, or their accessibility at Whole Foods, I was instantly taken by CB!

While they don’t cater to moms, they have a wide range of baby products from SPF to shampoo, bubble bath and more. In addition to all of the above, they have a great price point and come in a variety of sizes to gauge the quality without burning a hole in your pocket. Below is the array of items I sampled and I can’t wait to give you feedback on them. Be sure to check back in August for reviews!!

Why Wash with Water: I became familiar with Wash with Water products while still in undergrad. They are a small business that offers a handful of organic baby product from washes to creams. While they still have limited options today, there is something about them that just draws you in whether it be the packaging or branding of the products. They only distribute online making them less accessible than other options, but I’m excited to finally test their products and provide feedback!!

Why Made Of: In recent times there are many new natural baby product companies hitting the shelves at big retailers. One of these that happened to pass by me was Made Of. I believe you can find them at your local Target and they offer an array of staple baby skincare items as well as non toxic diapers and wipes. In terms of pricing the value is there and comparable to others, making them a great competitor for brands like Honest Company/Babyganics.

The packaging is all the same print for each product, so you just can’t miss them if you’re at the store lol. Their products are organic, vegan, non gmo, and gluten free. If you’re curious about an ingredient they even provide background information online for consumers so there is a lot of transparency. In addition, they also offer product subscriptions as well as samples to explore their products. Below are the items I sampled. Be sure to check back this August for a full review.

Dr. Bronner uses only the purest organic and fair trade ingredients—most products vegan and certified to the same organic standards as food! No synthetic preservatives, no foaming agents. Why Dr. Bronners: If you’re familiar with natural products for the past 20 years, Dr. Bronner’s is an iconic staple. While I haven’t explore the products in ages, my mother continues to use their products since the day I was born and swears by them. To date they offer probably less than 20 different products in a handful of scents, but people love the quality behind the brand. They don’t do fancy marketing and haven’t changed the packaging since their inception, because they are just that good, and people are proud supports of their products regardless.

That being said, I was excited to see what they offer in the baby department. To be honest, everything could be used on a baby, but if you’re trying to avoid even natural derived scents, they only have one unscented baby set. While I’m not apposed to natural fragrances, I’m trying to adhere to the unscented products for a little bit and sampled their staple set along with a few others. Get the deets on this baby set and more come august to EDS!!
